EDMÉ SAMSON ET CIE, 19TH CENTURY FRENCH PORCELAIN SHELL-FORM SHAVING BOWL/BASIN
Modelled as a scallop shell with shaped rim and integral soap aperture, the body painted with floral sprays and decorated with pâte-sur-pâte style reserves enclosed by gilt borders, the rim and moulded details further picked out in gilt with monogram "W". The underside with various factory marks, a recognised feature of wares produced by Edmé Samson et Cie.

Samson founded in Paris in the mid-19th century, and specialised in high-quality reproductions and decorative wares inspired by earlier European and Oriental porcelains.
