Description

Object:
1869 Pattern 24th Regiment of Foot Shako, owned by George Frederick Hodson.

Provenance:
This shako belonged to George Frederick John Hodson from Bray County, Wicklow. He served in Captain Reginald Younghusbands Company C at Isandhlwana, positioned on the left of the line. His group were the last to perish at this battles conclusion. Its thought that either Hodson or Younghusband made the final, desperate bayonet charge, attempting to slay as many enemies as possible before an inevitable death by assegai. The provided photo displays Hodson in full-dress lieutenants uniform, during his tenure as Assistant to Sir Henry Bartle Frere.
